Australia Awards alumna Miss Nisaxonh Sourivong is helping shape the future of skills development in Laos.
After completing a Master of International Sustainable Tourism Management at Monash University in 2023, Nisaxonh returned home with new ideas, global perspectives, and practical knowledge to support technical and vocational education and training.
Now working at the Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training within the Ministry of Education and Sports, she is passionate about expanding equal access to education—especially for young people seeking employment skills.
Through her Australia Awards experience, Nisaxonh strengthened her understanding of sustainable tourism, industry-responsive training, and curriculum development. She now applies these learnings by collaborating with vocational colleges and development partners to ensure tourism training reflects current industry needs, including sustainable practices, digital competence, and practical workforce skills.
“The journey is not just about studying at a world-class university,” she says, “but also about experiencing a different culture, learning from people from all walks of life, and growing personally and professionally.”
Her advice to future applicants? Believe in yourself, stay focused on your goals, and be ready to use the opportunity to make a difference in your community.

Australia’s Alumni Innovation Grants have supported community development projects across Laos for the past 6 years.
There are now 39 successful projects that demonstrate the leadership skills of our Lao-Australian Alumni.
Projects like “Sign for the Future”, where in 2022 Ms Vannaphone Sitthirath used an Australian grant to produce sign language learning materials for the estimated 80,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in Laos.

Australia’s Alumni Innovation Grants have supported community development projects across Laos for the past 6 years, demonstrating our Australian Alumni’s skills and leadership.
With an Australian Diploma in Permaculture, Mr Phaeng Xaphokhame is using his expertise to support farmers and improve livelihoods in Luang Prabang Province, Laos.
In 2023, Phaeng received a grant to preserve native seeds and demonstrate food-resilience systems for small-scale farmers. Since then, he has initiated further projects focusing on bamboo conservation and honey production, helping local communities increase their incomes while protecting natural resources.

Bounhieng Sotapaserth, Thipphachan Phomphakdy, and Sengduean Chirdchung are making the most of their time in Australia!
Since arriving in Australia in 2025 to undertake Master’s degrees at the University of Melbourne, the three scholars have embraced university life and become active members of the university community.
They are making life-long connections with Australians and students from the ASEAN region, all while studying hard and learning new skills for Laos’ development.
Recently, the three scholars have formed the Lao Student Association at the University of Melbourne, helping to connect and support Lao students and share Lao culture – especially their love of Lao food – with the wider university community.

ໃນປະຈຸບັນ ມີອະດີດນັກສຶກສາ ລາວ-ອົດສະຕຣາລີ 5 ທ່ານ ທີ່ກຳລັງຈັດຕັ້ງປະຕິບັດໂຄງການພາຍໃຕ້ ທຶນຊ່ວຍເຫຼືອລ້າຂະໜາດນ້ອຍ ສຳລັບອະດີດນັກສຶກສາລາວ-ອົດສະຕຣາລີໃນ ທົ່ວ ສ.ປ.ປ. ລາວ. ພວກເຮົາຫວັງວ່າຈະໄດ້ແບ່ງປັນຜົນສຳເລັດຂອງທຸກໆໂຄງການ ໃນໄວໆນີ້! --- The team from the Laos Australia Institute recently travelled to Luang Prabang province to check on the progress of 2 Alumni Innovation Grant projects.
At Sithan Primary School, Somchay Makesavanh is busily preparing a special learning space to support children with autism. In Luang Prabang, many children with special needs stay at home because their school does not offer appropriate support. Somchay’s project aims to create a model classroom for teachers and schools to learn from.
And, in Viengkham district, Phaeng Xaphokhame is continuing his excellent work in supporting local farmers. From preserving native seeds and increasing incomes through honey production, Phaeng is now looking to increase bamboo production for food, construction and handicrafts.

Ketsana Xaiyasarn’s journey began in a small riverside village in Vientiane Province, where life close to the water shaped his deep respect for nature and the communities it sustains. That early connection would one day inspire his career in environmental protection and regional cooperation.
He began his career in water resources management and later joined the Lao National Mekong Committee Secretariat. Over the years, he has grown into a respected leader in international cooperation, helping bring countries together to protect shared water resources and build a more sustainable future for the Mekong region.
With support from the 🇦🇺 Australia Awards Scholarships, Ketsana completed his Master of International Development at South Australia’s Flinders University in 2021. The experience broadened his leadership, confidence, and global perspective, while reinforcing a key lesson that continues to guide his work: “Sustainable development is not only about managing natural resources effectively but also about improving the lives and resilience of the people who depend on them.”
Today, as Director of Upper Mekong Cooperation Division at the 🇱🇦 Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Ketsana is a champion for climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and sustainable livelihoods across Laos and the Mekong region. Through his work, he promotes cooperation, people-centred development, and the sustainable management of shared natural resources.
His message is both simple and powerful: “Every small action matters. From reducing plastic use to planting trees, each of us has a role to play in creating a greener, healthier future for Laos.”
Australia is working to support inclusive development in the Lao PDR through the English Language Equity Program. Delivered by Vientiane College and funded through the Laos Australia Institute, the program aims to improve English language skills for Lao people with disabilities and those living outside the capital city.
The course focuses on practical language skills for IELTS preparation, general English and learning strategies, as well as professional development to support scholarship applications and interview readiness.
Improving English language skills can open opportunities for employment, further education, and regional dialogue, and we are excited to see what is next for these talented students!

Through the Women in Leadership program, 15 outstanding Australian Alumni women have successfully completed a 14-month leadership journey to build the skills, confidence and networks needed to navigate the challenges faced by women leaders in Laos.
We recently held a closing ceremony to celebrate the program that brought together learning, coaching, and opportunities to learn from each other’s experiences, test ideas, and undertake group projects.

Australia’s Alumni Innovation Grants have supported community development projects across Laos for the past 6 years, demonstrating our Australian Alumni’s skills and leadership.
With an Australian Diploma in Permaculture, Mr Phaeng Xaphokhame is using his expertise to support farmers and improve livelihoods in Luang Prabang Province, Laos.
In 2023, Phaeng received a grant to preserve native seeds and demonstrate food-resilience systems for small-scale farmers. Since then, he has initiated further projects focusing on bamboo conservation and honey production, helping local communities increase their incomes while protecting natural resources.

Bounhieng Sotapaserth, Thipphachan Phomphakdy, and Sengduean Chirdchung are making the most of their time in Australia!
Since arriving in Australia in 2025 to undertake Master’s degrees at the University of Melbourne, the three scholars have embraced university life and become active members of the university community.
They are making life-long connections with Australians and students from the ASEAN region, all while studying hard and learning new skills for Laos’ development.
Recently, the three scholars have formed the Lao Student Association at the University of Melbourne, helping to connect and support Lao students and share Lao culture – especially their love of Lao food – with the wider university community.
Congratulations to these inspiring Australia Awards Scholars for their inspiring contributions both inside and outside the classroom. It’s great to see your leadership skills in action. The team from the Laos Australia Institute recently travelled to Luang Prabang province to check on the progress of 2 Alumni Innovation Grant projects.
At Sithan Primary School, Somchay Makesavanh is busily preparing a special learning space to support children with autism. In Luang Prabang, many children with special needs stay at home because their school does not offer appropriate support. Somchay’s project aims to create a model classroom for teachers and schools to learn from.
And, in Viengkham district, Phaeng Xaphokhame is continuing his excellent work in supporting local farmers. From preserving native seeds and increasing incomes through honey production, Phaeng is now looking to increase bamboo production for food, construction and handicrafts.

Ketsana Xaiyasarn’s journey began in a small riverside village in Vientiane Province, where life close to the water shaped his deep respect for nature and the communities it sustains. That early connection would one day inspire his career in environmental protection and regional cooperation.
He began his career in water resources management and later joined the Lao National Mekong Committee Secretariat. Over the years, he has grown into a respected leader in international cooperation, helping bring countries together to protect shared water resources and build a more sustainable future for the Mekong region.
With support from the 🇦🇺 Australia Awards Scholarships, Ketsana completed his Master of International Development at South Australia’s Flinders University in 2021. The experience broadened his leadership, confidence, and global perspective, while reinforcing a key lesson that continues to guide his work: “Sustainable development is not only about managing natural resources effectively but also about improving the lives and resilience of the people who depend on them.”
Today, as Director of Upper Mekong Cooperation Division at the 🇱🇦 Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Ketsana is a champion for climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and sustainable livelihoods across Laos and the Mekong region. Through his work, he promotes cooperation, people-centred development, and the sustainable management of shared natural resources.
His message is both simple and powerful: “Every small action matters. From reducing plastic use to planting trees, each of us has a role to play in creating a greener, healthier future for Laos.”

Australia is working to support inclusive development in the Lao PDR through the English Language Equity Program. Delivered by Vientiane College and funded through the Laos Australia Institute, the program aims to improve English language skills for Lao people with disabilities and those living outside the capital city.
The course focuses on practical language skills for IELTS preparation, general English and learning strategies, as well as professional development to support scholarship applications and interview readiness.
Improving English language skills can open opportunities for employment, further education, and regional dialogue, and we are excited to see what is next for these talented students!

ໂດຍຜ່ານໂຄງການ ພັດທະນາພາວະຄວາມເປັນຜູ້ນຳຂອງແມ່ຍິງ, ອະດີດນັກສຶກສາລາວ-ອົດສະຕຣາລີ ຈຳນວນ 15 ທ່ານ ໄດ້ສໍາເລັດການເຂົ້າຮ່ວມໂຄງການເປັນເວລາ 14 ເດືອນ ຢ່າງຈົບງາມ ເພື່ອເສີມສ້າງທັກສະ, ຄວາມໝັ້ນໃຈ ແລະ ເຄືອຂ່າຍ ທີ່ຈໍາເປັນ ໃນການຮັບມືກັບສິ່ງທ້າທາຍຕ່າງໆ ໃນວຽກງານການນຳພາ ຂອງເຂົາເຈົ້າ ຢູ່ໃນບ່ອນເຮັດວຽກ.

Through the Women in Leadership program, 15 outstanding Australian Alumni women have successfully completed a 14-month leadership journey to build the skills, confidence and networks needed to navigate the challenges faced by women leaders in Laos.
We recently held a closing ceremony to celebrate the program that brought together learning, coaching, and opportunities to learn from each other’s experiences, test ideas, and undertake group projects.
