Congratulations Phachongchit Bounmixay!🌍 Partnerships in Global Health with Australia Awards Scholarships building a healthier region for all!
🏥 The global statistics are eye-opening—nearly 300,000 women die annually from pregnancy-related causes and millions of infants face preventable deaths. Ensuring equitable access to healthcare is vital for creating a fairer, healthier world. 🤱
Meet Australia Awards alumna Phachongchit Bounmixay, a pediatrician from Laos 🇱🇦 and Master of Counselling, Rehabilitation and Mental Health graduate from LaTrobe University, who advocates for breastfeeding as a foundation of both infant and maternal health.
Breastfeeding provides essential nutrition, strengthens the mother-baby bond, and delivers vital antibodies that boost an infant’s immunity. It plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of infections, significantly lowers the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, and supports cognitive development in babies.
For mothers, breastfeeding aids postnatal recovery, helps regulate hormones, and reduces the risk of postnatal depression. 👶
Phachongchit’s holistic approach, integrating medical expertise with mental health counselling, demonstrates the importance of comprehensive maternal and child healthcare. A healthy, supported mother leads to a healthier child. 👩👧

“I believe that inclusion is not just a value—it’s a way of life. Pride Month is a time to recognise the strength, resilience, and dignity of the LGBTIQ+ community, including here in Laos. 💪🌈
I believe true leadership is about creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and safe to be themselves. For me, being an ally means using my voice to uplift others, challenge bias, and keep learning how to do better. 🌱
To our LGBTIQ+ friends, colleagues, and loved ones in Laos: you inspire us with your courage. You deserve to thrive—not just during Pride Month, but every day. 💖🌟
Let’s continue to build a future where diversity is celebrated and equality is a reality.”

June 5 is #WorldEnvironmentDay, a day to reflect on our shared planet and celebrate those who are working to make our environment cleaner and more sustainable.
With a PhD from University of Sydney, Oulayvanh has a long history of working with rural communities, encouraging the sustainable use of local resources to maintain and improve livelihoods.
As a senior Environmental and Social Consultant, Oulayvanh provides policy recommendations on poverty reduction while preserving the local environment.
A leader within the Australia Alumni community, he has recently been appointed as the founding coordinator for the #act4climate Community of Practice, a professional group for Lao Australia Alumni working on climate change. The Community of Practice group will deliver a range of activities to raise climate change awareness over the next year.
Dr Oulavanh has a clear message for #WorldEnvironmentDay
“If every person can ‘start to stop’ polluting their local environment, we will have clear air, blue water and a long life. Changing our behaviours by shifting towards more sustainable habits will play a significant role in environmental sustainability. It’s the day that needs everyone to join hands and work together to save our environment.”
