Over 120 alumni and partners from government, civil society, organisations of persons with disabilities, the private sector and Australia-supported programs came together under the theme “Advancing Inclusion through Localised Leadership, Learning, and Partnerships in Lao PDR.”

The GEDSI Alumni Symposium 2026 in Vientiane strengthened the networks, leadership and partnerships needed to ensure all people, including women, people with disabilities and marginalised groups, can participate in and benefit from economic and social development.
Over 120 alumni and partners from government, civil society, organisations of persons with disabilities, the private sector and Australia-supported programs came together under the theme “Advancing Inclusion through Localised Leadership, Learning, and Partnerships in Lao PDR.”
💬 Australian Ambassador for Gender Equality, the Hon. Michelle O’Byrne, made a special guest appearance assisting to open the event. Ambassador O’Byrne reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to inclusion and to ensure that everyone could benefit from economic opportunity.

For International Youth Day, we’re celebrating Dethdesa Samountry — better known as Simon — an Australia Awards alumnus using education, innovation and community action to help shape a more inclusive future for Laos. 🇱🇦✨
Born and raised in Vientiane, Simon began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. After more than five years in the financial sector, he received an Australia Awards Scholarship to study for a Master’s degree in International Business and Commerce at Macquarie University.
Today, Simon works as a Private Sector Development Advisor, supporting inclusive economic opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
For Simon, young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow — they are partners in creating solutions today. He believes Laos’ next generation needs quality education, mentorship, confidence and opportunities to lead, innovate and contribute to sustainable development. 🚀
Beyond hid professional role, Simon is inspiring youth action on eco-friendly fashion through his initiative, Veyra – Wear for Change. What started as a small grant and a big idea has grown into promoting eco-friendly fashion through workshops, clothing swaps and a vision for a sustainable fashion hub where young people can reduce textile waste and make sustainability part of everyday life. 👕♻️
Simon’s message is clear: “When young people are supported to learn, lead and create, they become a powerful force for positive change.” 💚
Australia Awards alumna Miss Nisaxonh Sourivong is helping shape the future of skills development in Laos.
After completing a Master of International Sustainable Tourism Management at Monash University in 2023, Nisaxonh returned home with new ideas, global perspectives, and practical knowledge to support technical and vocational education and training.
Now working at the Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training within the Ministry of Education and Sports, she is passionate about expanding equal access to education—especially for young people seeking employment skills.
Through her Australia Awards experience, Nisaxonh strengthened her understanding of sustainable tourism, industry-responsive training, and curriculum development. She now applies these learnings by collaborating with vocational colleges and development partners to ensure tourism training reflects current industry needs, including sustainable practices, digital competence, and practical workforce skills.
“The journey is not just about studying at a world-class university,” she says, “but also about experiencing a different culture, learning from people from all walks of life, and growing personally and professionally.”
Her advice to future applicants? Believe in yourself, stay focused on your goals, and be ready to use the opportunity to make a difference in your community.

Australia’s Alumni Innovation Grants have supported community development projects across Laos for the past 6 years.
There are now 39 successful projects that demonstrate the leadership skills of our Lao-Australian Alumni.
Projects like “Sign for the Future”, where in 2022 Ms Vannaphone Sitthirath used an Australian grant to produce sign language learning materials for the estimated 80,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in Laos.

Australia’s Alumni Innovation Grants have supported community development projects across Laos for the past 6 years, demonstrating our Australian Alumni’s skills and leadership.
With an Australian Diploma in Permaculture, Mr Phaeng Xaphokhame is using his expertise to support farmers and improve livelihoods in Luang Prabang Province, Laos.
In 2023, Phaeng received a grant to preserve native seeds and demonstrate food-resilience systems for small-scale farmers. Since then, he has initiated further projects focusing on bamboo conservation and honey production, helping local communities increase their incomes while protecting natural resources.

Bounhieng Sotapaserth, Thipphachan Phomphakdy, and Sengduean Chirdchung are making the most of their time in Australia!
Since arriving in Australia in 2025 to undertake Master’s degrees at the University of Melbourne, the three scholars have embraced university life and become active members of the university community.
They are making life-long connections with Australians and students from the ASEAN region, all while studying hard and learning new skills for Laos’ development.
Recently, the three scholars have formed the Lao Student Association at the University of Melbourne, helping to connect and support Lao students and share Lao culture – especially their love of Lao food – with the wider university community.

Over 120 alumni and partners from government, civil society, organisations of persons with disabilities, the private sector and Australia-supported programs came together under the theme “Advancing Inclusion through Localised Leadership, Learning, and Partnerships in Lao PDR.”
💬 Australian Ambassador for Gender Equality, the Hon. Michelle O’Byrne, made a special guest appearance assisting to open the event. Ambassador O’Byrne reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to inclusion and to ensure that everyone could benefit from economic opportunity.
🌱 The symposium featured accessible, lived-experience-led sessions, including discussions on inclusive climate action, economic empowerment, breaking barriers to participation, and inclusive leadership in practice.💡

For International Youth Day, we’re celebrating Dethdesa Samountry — better known as Simon — an Australia Awards alumnus using education, innovation and community action to help shape a more inclusive future for Laos. 🇱🇦✨
Born and raised in Vientiane, Simon began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. After more than five years in the financial sector, he received an Australia Awards Scholarship to study for a Master’s degree in International Business and Commerce at Macquarie University.
Today, Simon works as a Private Sector Development Advisor, supporting inclusive economic opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
For Simon, young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow — they are partners in creating solutions today. He believes Laos’ next generation needs quality education, mentorship, confidence and opportunities to lead, innovate and contribute to sustainable development. 🚀
Beyond hid professional role, Simon is inspiring youth action on eco-friendly fashion through his initiative, Veyra – Wear for Change. What started as a small grant and a big idea has grown into promoting eco-friendly fashion through workshops, clothing swaps and a vision for a sustainable fashion hub where young people can reduce textile waste and make sustainability part of everyday life. 👕♻️
Simon’s message is clear: “When young people are supported to learn, lead and create, they become a powerful force for positive change.” 💚

Australia Awards alumna Miss Nisaxonh Sourivong is helping shape the future of skills development in Laos.
After completing a Master of International Sustainable Tourism Management at Monash University in 2023, Nisaxonh returned home with new ideas, global perspectives, and practical knowledge to support technical and vocational education and training.
Now working at the Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training within the Ministry of Education and Sports, she is passionate about expanding equal access to education—especially for young people seeking employment skills.
Through her Australia Awards experience, Nisaxonh strengthened her understanding of sustainable tourism, industry-responsive training, and curriculum development. She now applies these learnings by collaborating with vocational colleges and development partners to ensure tourism training reflects current industry needs, including sustainable practices, digital competence, and practical workforce skills.
“The journey is not just about studying at a world-class university,” she says, “but also about experiencing a different culture, learning from people from all walks of life, and growing personally and professionally.”
Her advice to future applicants? Believe in yourself, stay focused on your goals, and be ready to use the opportunity to make a difference in your community.

Australia’s Alumni Innovation Grants have supported community development projects across Laos for the past 6 years.
There are now 39 successful projects that demonstrate the leadership skills of our Lao-Australian Alumni.
Projects like “Sign for the Future”, where in 2022 Ms Vannaphone Sitthirath used an Australian grant to produce sign language learning materials for the estimated 80,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in Laos.

Australia’s Alumni Innovation Grants have supported community development projects across Laos for the past 6 years, demonstrating our Australian Alumni’s skills and leadership.
With an Australian Diploma in Permaculture, Mr Phaeng Xaphokhame is using his expertise to support farmers and improve livelihoods in Luang Prabang Province, Laos.
In 2023, Phaeng received a grant to preserve native seeds and demonstrate food-resilience systems for small-scale farmers. Since then, he has initiated further projects focusing on bamboo conservation and honey production, helping local communities increase their incomes while protecting natural resources.

Bounhieng Sotapaserth, Thipphachan Phomphakdy, and Sengduean Chirdchung are making the most of their time in Australia!
Since arriving in Australia in 2025 to undertake Master’s degrees at the University of Melbourne, the three scholars have embraced university life and become active members of the university community.
They are making life-long connections with Australians and students from the ASEAN region, all while studying hard and learning new skills for Laos’ development.
Recently, the three scholars have formed the Lao Student Association at the University of Melbourne, helping to connect and support Lao students and share Lao culture – especially their love of Lao food – with the wider university community.
Congratulations to these inspiring Australia Awards Scholars for their inspiring contributions both inside and outside the classroom. It’s great to see your leadership skills in action.
